Wendy Jehlen of ANIKAYA (Somerville, MA) will travel to Japan to develop a collaboration with Butoh artist and former National Theater of the Deaf actor Dakei (Tokyo, Japan). They will collaborate on a new work, Delicateness in Times of Brutality, and work toward developing a new, movement-based approach to silent theater.
dog & pony dc (Washington, D.C.) will share the impact of their audience integration methodology with San Diego Repertory Theatre (San Diego, CA) as part of two week-long residencies prior to the REP’s production of BEACHTOWN, an adaptation of dog & pony dc’s show BEERTOWN. Time during and outside the residencies will be spent co-rewriting and re-writing BEACHTOWN with Herbert Siguenza.
Dancers Megan Bridge and Beau Hancock of fidget (Philadelphia, PA) will travel to East Charleston, VT to work with Steve Paxton and Lisa Nelson in their studio. The studio time will focus on studying and learning PA RT, an improvised duet that Paxton and Nelson performed from 1978-2002.
Aaron Landsman of Is This You (New York, NY) will take a six-day trip to Novi Sad and Belgrade, Serbia to continue work on a new theater project, Language Reversal, about translation, dictatorship, and empathy. The trip will include ethnographic interviews with Serbian artists, activists, and journalists, as well as developmental workshops of new theatrical material created in English and Serbian.
Jennifer Kimball (Clarkston, GA) will engage in a technical production mentorship under Mike Tutaj, a projection and sound designer based in Chicago, IL. Kimball will make three visits to observe Tutaj in different stages of a production process, and Tutaj will come to Atlanta to culminate their multi-step conversation in a public forum. The forum will include information-sharing and professional development around local needs for video production and projection.
Looking for Lilith (Louisville, KY) ensemble members will travel to Xela (Quetzaltenango), Guatemala to reaffirm a 13-year relationship with sister ensemble El Proyecto Historias de Fe (HdF). The trip will provide an opportunity to meet with a new cross-sector partner (a health advocacy organization in Pacaj), and will memorialize and celebrate the life of Alicia Moscoso, a HdF ensemble member who passed away recently.
Rebecca Mwase (New Orleans, LA) will bring David Quaye, a dance teacher and choreographer from the University of Ghana, Legon (Accra, Ghana), to New Orleans to discuss the African diasporic experience and teach the Vessels ensemble specific dances, songs, and choreographies that will enhance their development process leading to a premiere in Providence, RI.
Rachel Dickstein of Ripe Time (Brooklyn, NY) will travel to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland to meet with dramaturg, producer, and audience engagement facilitator Amrita Ramanan to plan and brainstorm upcoming community engagement and artist-audience dialogues for Ripe Time’s touring production of Murakami’s Sleep. Together, they will also attend productions and discuss new prospective collaborations and opportunities with OSF.
Soledad Ensemble (New York, NY) will visit Barn Arts Collective (Bass Harbor, ME) to continue their early devising process on The Seven Ravens Project, an adaptation of a Brothers Grimm tale woven with stories of contemporary child migrants, immigrants, and refugees. The visit will also include workshops for the local school district, poetic collaboration with social service organization Mano en Mano, and a culminating work-in-progress performance for the local community.
Swim Pony Performing Arts (Philadelphia, PA) and theatrical designer/producer/ educator/researcher Ian Garrett (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) will explore their shared areas of inquiry around the emerging hybridization of theater and game design. As part of a collaborative intensive, they will: design prompts and processes to dig into macro-level game/theater convergence points; workshop each of their current projects; and share their learning with other artists and the public.
Team Sunshine Performance Corporation (Philadelphia, PA) will host an artistic and cultural exchange between American and Cuban artists (Jorge Caballero Elizarde, Lilian Santiesteban Monges, and Cheryl Zaldivar Jimenez) to lay the groundwork for the future creation of a new devised work entitled ¡BIENVENIDOS BLANCOS! OR WELCOME WHITE PEOPLE! The piece examines the volatility of U.S.-Cuba relations in the context of Cuba’s history of white appeasement.
Will MacAdams (Easthampton, MA) will invite multidisciplinary artist Angela Davis Johnson (Atlanta, GA) to join the creative team for a rehearsal residency of his new play White Mourning at the Ko Festival of Performance. During the residency, Angela will design and build a mask for the character of Gasping Whiteness.
