Exchange Grants - How to Apply

We hosted an information session on January 11, 2022 specifically reviewing our currently open Exchange Grants.

THE EXCHANGE GRANT APPLICATION IS CURRENTLY CLOSED.

APPLICANTS WILL BE NOTIFIED THE WEEK OF MARCH 18, 2022

Advance Preparation Materials

  • The following information is provided so you can anticipate what will be requested in the online application form and can begin to prepare your answers.

  • NET has a new proposal submission system, and it is still a work in progress. As in years past, we strongly suggest drafting your responses in a Word document or Google document so that you can easily cut and paste them into the application, and to ensure that you have a separate, saved record of your work in case you experience any issues with the online form.

  • To view a brief overview of the new submission system, check out this video.

  • If you have previously applied for an Exchange Grant, please note that we have made a few small changes to the application and requirements. Please review the form carefully to avoid unnecessary work!

  • Unlike our previous grant portal, this website does not allow you to save and edit your answers before submitting.

  • Only use the buttons on the form to navigate between the four steps of the proposal form. Do not use your back and forward buttons, as it will cause you to lose your progress.

  • You do not need to log in to this website to apply for an exchange grant

  • If you run into issues, contact netten@ensembletheaters.net to request assistance prior to the deadline.

  • Character limits have been removed for the narrative questions on the application in order to have applicants focus on the quality of responses versus spending time editing. This decision is in the spirit of our commitment to equity to allow more applicants to express themselves in a way that works best for them. All applicants are encouraged to keep responses simple and direct and there is no expectation of receiving long responses. For more information on a discussion surrounding character limits, please check out an article on the blog Nonprofit AF, We need to have a serious talk about character limits on grant applications."

Narrative

Project Summary:
Summarize your project in a sentence or two.

Project Goal:
What is the main focus of the exchange? (Understanding that projects may have multiple components, select the most applicable.)

A) Artistic or technical/production exploration
B) Administrative development/exchange

Project Description:
• Provide a description of the proposed project, including detailed information about what skills/techniques will be shared and/or what specific explorations, projects or creations each partner will undertake.

• Provide a rationale from the applicant for choosing to partner with this/these organization(s) or individual(s). Please keep in mind that grants are awarded based on the quality of the relationship building. You should address the planning, potential learning for you/your partner, issues/practices to be explored through this existing connection, and why it is critical to your artistic or ensemble practice at this moment and how this exchange may provide potential benefit to the larger field through shared relevant learning.

Collaborative History:
Briefly summarize the history of the relationship between the applicants, including prior co-creations, touring exchanges, collaborations, or other interactions (both remote/digital and in person).

Project Schedule:
Provide a detailed activity plan and schedule, including project start and end dates.

Project Outcomes:
• Looking ahead, what impact might this exchange have on each partner? If the project is exploratory, how will this connection support your practice in the long term? Exploration is an appropriate outcome in itself, but we also want to hear how that exploration will serve your practice going forward. We would also like to get a sense of how this exchange may have an impact on the larger ensemble community once findings are shared through field learning.

• How might grant funds increase organizational financial stability?

Community Engagement:
Describe how you will engage your, and your partner’s, communities in sharing the project.  NOTE: If the main goal of the project is an administrative development/exchange, you may omit this section.

Equity/Diversity/Inclusion:

How does your work, your ensemble/organization (if applicable), and/or your proposed activities reflect NET’s values of equity and inclusion? Please read NET’s Equity in Funding Statement and NET’s Accountability Statement to inform your response. How are you currently addressing systemic inequities or incorporating anti-racism, anti-oppression practices into your work -- and/or how you are challenging yourselves to move forward in these areas?

Budget

Use this budget template to list the requested grant amount and detail your project expenses and income; include budget notes to identify how you determined these amounts.

Save your budget as a PDF file with your name/ensemble name in the filename to upload.

Need help? Email netten@ensembletheaters.net to set up a time to talk by phone.

Partnership Letter

Each project partner should provide a separate signed letter affirming that they have read and agree to the proposal. This letter is also an opportunity for partners to communicate their passion and interest for participating in the proposed activities, beyond what is included in the application.

Letters must be submitted as PDF documents, either on letterhead or as a copy of an original email from the project partner’s email address. Letters should be limited to one page. For applicants that are organizations, the signatory must be an organizational official with the authority to commit their company to the proposed partnership.

If you receive a grant:

Final Report

Upon project completion, each grantee is required to submit a final report, which will include both a narrative and a financial reporting component. NET will withhold 20% of grant funds until the final report is received. Any grantee that fails to submit this required report will not be eligible for future NET funding (grants or member subsidies).

Sharebacks

Building field knowledge is a primary goal of the NET/TEN program. Thus, in addition to a final report, grantees and their participating partners will be asked to provide NET with at least one piece of content that we can share publicly as part of the NET/TEN Shareback Library.

Sharebacks are not intended to document the work; instead, the materials provided should be tutorial or instructive and focus on the most exciting, innovative, and instructional portions of your activities that may be helpful to other artists or ensembles embarking on similar projects or investigations

NET welcomes your questions at any time prior to submitting an application, or throughout the review process. Please contact program staff at: netten@ensembletheaters.net
