Annalisa Dias (Washington, D.C.) and Laguna Pueblo/Cherokee composer Ronee Penoi (Washington, D.C.) will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico to forge relationships and conduct research for their musical, The Carlisle School Project. Together they will visit the six villages of Laguna Pueblo and the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, and have meetings with the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. Chris Jonas of Littleglobe (Albuquerque, NM) will act as a regional community partner and help to build bridges to the Laguna community and indigenous artists in the area.
Celeste Miller (Grinnell, IA) will gather with Dora Arreola, Artistic Director of Mujeres en Ritual (Tampa, FL / Tijuana, Mexico), singer/songwriter Elise Witt (Atlanta, GA), and three other members of Mujeres en Ritual (Tijuana, Mexico) for a 10-day creative residency related to the Women at Water’s Edge/Mujeres al Filo del Agua project in Tijuana, Mexico. The residency will result in an integrated visual digital/virtual landscape design for a culminating performance piece.
Double Edge Theatre (Ashfield, MA) will engage in an exchange with Betty’s Daughter Arts Collaborative (New York, NY), totaling a week and encompassing training (stilts and other objects), artistic research, reflective dialogues, and community engagement. Together they will explore the nature of ensembles, their unique relationship to art and cultural sustainability, and specific methodologies including shape-note and freedom singing.
Playwright Jessica Kahkoska (New York, NY) will travel to Colorado to work with North Fork Valley Creative Coalition (Paonia, CO) and the local community on a new play titled Too Wild To Drill. The project is inspired by a call to action around saving public lands by The Wilderness Society, a non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to protecting natural areas and federal public lands in the US. Local community members will be invited to perform in the resulting project and discussions.
Jump-Start Performance Co. (San Antonio, TX) will host a five-day workshop for community participants led by Judith Sloan of EarSay (Sunnyside, NY). Sloan will also facilitate an after-school workshop with youth in grades 3-5 from Bonham Academy, and complete her visit with a solo performance of excerpts from her projects Crossing the BLVD and Yo Miss!.
Portland Experimental Theatre Ensemble (Portland, OR) will collaborate with Ivan Talijancic of WaxFactory (New York, NY) and Alexandra Beller of Alexandra Beller/Dances (New York, NY) on a collaborative performance exchange workshop. Capitalizing on all three ensembles’ movement-based approaches to devising, Talijancic and Beller will share their unique MINDFLOCK method with PETE ensemble members and students to provoke dialogue and exchange.
Experimental playwright Rachel Jendrzejewski (Minneapolis, MN) will travel to California for a week-long residency with Los Angeles Performance Practice (Los Angeles, CA), building a new relationship with the goal of ongoing collaboration. The visit will serve as a preliminary exploration for a site-specific piece responding to The Passion of Joan of Arc, a landmark 1928 silent film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer.
Superhero Clubhouse (Astoria, NY) will send fellows Shy Richardson (artist/poet) and Karina Yager (climate scientist) to Puerto Rico to develop and deepen a relationship with El Puente Puerto Rico - Latino Climate Action Network (Mayagüez, Puerto Rico). During their visit, the fellows will work with the local community to create an original performance about Hurricane Maria and climate displacement.
Theater Mitu (New York, NY) will travel to Kerala, India from Brooklyn, NY to collaborate with P.V. Sivakumar Gurukkal, a renowned master teacher of Kalaripayattu (a South Indian martial art form). The visit will include trainings in Yoga and Kalaripayattu, discussions in Ayurvedic health practices, and rituals in Hindu Divinity. The week of activities will coincide with Theater Mitu’s one-year anniversary of the inauguration of their new interdisciplinary art space, MITU580.
Miriam Gordon-Stewart, Artistic Director of Victory Hall Opera (Charlottesville, VA) will meet with DJ Kurs, Director of Deaf West Theatre (Los Angeles, CA) to discuss the possibility of co-producing a deaf opera. Together the two companies will plan a structure for workshopping a couple of short scenes from the opera Dialogues of the Carmelites, involving two singers and two deaf performers.
Virginia Grise (Cedar Park, TX) will partner with musician Martha Gonzalez (Los Angeles, CA) of the band Quetzal to develop music for a concert version of her stage adaptation of Their Dogs Came With Them by Helena Maria Viramontes. Together they will hold three songwriting workshops in the Perryville Women’s Prison (Goodyear, AZ) with the intention of collaboratively creating original songs with the women at Perryville.
The peer panelists for the Fall 2018 NET/TEN Travel Grants included: Moses Goods, Actor & Playwright (Honolulu, HI); Daniel Irizarry, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Lehman College and Artistic Director, One-Eighth Theater (New York, NY); and Amrita Ramanan, Director of Literary Development and Dramaturgy, Oregon Shakespeare Festival (Ashland, OR).
