Fall 2017 Travel Grant Recipients

Anisa George (Philadelphia, PA) and the ensemble of a new work titled Mission Hamlet will travel to see three separate Gob Squad (Berlin, Germany) works performed in the USA: War and Peace; We Are Gob Squad and So Are You; and Revolution Now. In April, a member of Gob Squad will travel to Philadelphia to work with the Mission Hamlet ensemble directly in the studio.

Designer/ Director Jeff Becker and Composer Sean LaRocca from ArtSpot Productions (New Orleans, LA) will travel to Irondale Ensemble (Brooklyn, NY) in February 2018 to meet with community partners, offer workshops, and identify local performers and musicians to be part of ArtSpot’s production of Sea of Common Catastrophe at Irondale in June 2018.

Artist’s Laboratory Theatre (Fayetteville, AR) will bring Mateo Ozelotzin-Hernandez (Los Angeles, CA) to Arkansas two times to develop and direct a site-specific original production of La Gran Posada. The visits will include devising workshops with Artist’s Laboratory Theatre and the Northwest Arkansas Workers Justice Center.

CarlosAlexis Cruz (Charlotte, NC) will meet with Alicia Martinez Alvarez of Teatro Laboratorio la Máscara (Mexico City, Mexico) to complete the research and dramaturgy phase for an original production titled Pícaro. The show takes on the archetypical story of Central American immigrants, seen through the eyes of the clown, with an emphasis on the treacherous journey of crossing México.

The Civilians' (Brooklyn, NY) Artistic Director Steve Cosson will make a second research trip to Louisiana to spend time with the leaders of the Louisiana Environmental Action Network (Baton Rouge, LA). This research is the basis for a new play about the environmental impacts of the petrochemical industry on the region, and the efforts of the community to make change in the face of this industry’s economic and political power.

dog & pony dc (Washington, D.C.) will participate in the inaugural DeafBlind Theatre Institute, a two-week gathering in Seattle for people who are deafblind to create, perform, and be audience to theatre for/by DeafBlind. Lorraine Ressegger-Slone and two other dog & pony dc artists will perform two sensory-centered Shakespeare Without Sight or Sound plays and teach ensemble devising and audience integration techniques to participants.

Emily Mendelsohn (Brooklyn, NY) and short-story writer Doreen Baingana (Entebbe, Uganda) will spend two weeks workshopping and walking in Kampala, Uganda. This workshop will help them find shared vocabulary across discipline and culture, as they work towards a new object theater piece titled Salt and Sugar.

Nadia Hagen of Flam Chen (Tucson, AZ) will travel across Cuba with Kimberly Mullen (San Diego, CA) for a 15-day cultural immersion with Afro-Cuban folkloric companies. Mullen’s current project Tambor Y Danza includes a social and educational curriculum that will provide personal contact and shared experiences among artists to promote positive, meaningful interactions, and impactful cultural exchange.

Meena Natarajan and Dipankar Mukherjee of Pangea World Theater (Minneapolis, MN) will travel to Hawai’i to advise in the creation of a new multicultural ensemble at PA’I Foundation (Hawai’i, Honolulu). In a six-day residency, they will instruct PA’I staff and prospective ensemble members in devised work technique with a focus on amplifying diverse voices, and will lay the groundwork for exchanges between the two companies.
