Fall 2014 Travel Grant Recipients

ABD Productions (San Francisco, CA) will engage artists and activists in El Salvador in a dialogue addressing the residual losses and traumas of a bloody 12-year civil war, deepening nascent collaborative relationships and learning new art methodologies rooted in the particular socio-political experiences of Salvadoran artists who produce art amidst post-war tensions and scarcity.

Artistic Leaders, Dic Wheeler and Marcella Trowbridge of ARTFARM (Middletown, CT), will travel to Sri Lanka to work with Sri Lankan artist, Gayathri Khemadasa. Together they will workshop and create original performance works with under-served populations utilizing physical theatre techniques, circus disciplines and traditional sound and music pathways.

Dan Froot (Los Angeles, CA) will lead oral history methodology workshops for artists in Cedar Rapids and Miami. Workshoppers will be invited to participate over the following year in creating book-length oral histories of local food-insecure families, on which a triptych of live radio plays will be based.

Sara Zatz and Bruce Allardice of Ping Chong + Company (New York, NY) will travel to Mexico City to lead a training workshop on the use of theater and first-hand narrative to address issues of sexual violence. Partners will be staff from La Casa Mandarina and members of theater company Las Reinas Chulas. This will be the first step towards building a theater co- production in Mexico City in 2016.

Radical Evolution (Brooklyn, NY) will travel to San Juan Bautista, CA to deepen a relationship with El Teatro Campesino and to conduct field research on best practices in ensemble-based work.  They will observe the ensemble and have dramaturgical conversations about projects they are interested in developing with ETC and their affiliated ensemble members.

Rogue Artists Ensemble (Los Angeles, CA) will work with Vampire Cowboys (New York, NY) founding Artistic Director, Qui Nguyen, on KAIDAN PROJECT, a site specific work developed as a co-production between Rogue Artists Ensemble, East West Players, and the Japanese American National Museum and directed by Sean Cawelti.

Safos Dance Theatre (Tucson, AZ) will cultivate a relationship with Quinteto Latino (San Jose, CA). Armando Castellano, founding artistic director of Quinteto Latino, will spend five days with Safos Dance Theatre in rehearsal and planning for future performances.
