In hard times, what keeps us going?
How do we safeguard our individual and collective health
and well-being, tend to our tender hearts, and spark our creative spirits?
How can ensemble practice—with its roots in shared power structures
and collaborative processes—be a powerful tool in cultural organizing
and movements for justice and collective liberation?
NET's national community of ensemble artists, co-creators, practitioners, and performing arts colleagues gathered to BREAK/through to connect and ground ourselves in communal healing, comfort, release, and hope.
An experiment in interactive hybrid convening, the day-long event was designed to share restorative inspiration and build mutual support through:
a new live offering in NET’s popular Inspiration On-Demand: Creators In Conversation series, featuring a discussion between NET Board member Godfrey L. Simmons, Jr. (Artistic Director, HartBeat Ensemble, Hartford, CT) and the legendary San Francisco–based Rhodessa Jones (Co-Artistic Director, Cultural Odyssey; Director, The Medea Project - Theater for Incarcerated Women; and newly arrived in Philadelphia as a year-long Pew Fellow-in-Residence);
a workshop on "Regenerativity and Freedom Dreaming" from Rad Pereira and Jan Cohen-Cruz, co-authors of the just released book Meeting the Moment: Socially Engaged Performance 1965-2020 By Those Who Lived It;
#NETdate meet-ups over the meal break for connection and conversation, using NET’s new Connector mobile app to match attendees in advance around specific topics (drop-ins also available);
art-based, participatory small-group experiences with breakout mini-workshops from Obvious Agency, Elizabeth Colón Nelson, and Rose Kim;
a town-hall-style, open community forum led by MC/Joker Siobhán O'Loughlin, and co-facilitated by Todd London, Daniel Park, and Leslie Tamaribuchi.
Whether you join us online or onsite, for the full day or just a few hours – it’s time for a BREAK/through! Come build community in shared space for reflection, gratitude, grief, rage, rants, yearning, joy, rejuvenation, play, and celebration.
COVID Safety Protocols:
In the spirit of collective care, we ask those attending the event in person to share our commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of our community. All in-person attendees and presenters will be required to be fully vaccinated (and present a vaccination card for entry), and to wear a mask throughout the event while indoors. Presenters may remove their masks while actively speaking, if they are able to remain physically distanced from all other presenters and attendees.
We strongly encourage all in-person presenters and attendees to self-test for Covid on the morning of Monday July 25 before coming to the event venue, and ask that you shift to joining us online instead of onsite if you receive a positive result, are feeling under the weather, or have experienced a recent Covid exposure. NET will have KN95 masks and a limited number of Covid tests available at the door for attendees’ use as needed.
