NETRoots R&D | Reflections & Revolutions: Fungi and Failure

Returning to Grace Every Time
Maya Malan-Gonzalez

I had the pleasure of attending research and development sessions with the Center for Unclassifiable Technologies and Experiences (C.U.T.E.) and the Network of Ensemble Theaters. The Zoom room was filled with artists and creators who all shared something in common: the love for developing and devising work with others. In these sessions we viewed images of lights and hands—connectivity between beings. I thought of fungi: root systems, of growing and spreading, creating eco-systems and universes.

The meeting was grounded in the idea of listening and translating stories. I reflected on my role in ensemble practice: where can I be better. I reflected on my relationship to failure, something feared by many but appreciated by me; failure something you grow from, and hopefully you can eventually laugh at.

In our second meeting I shared a story of a failure from many years ago, and together as a group we all laughed- together as a group, we released endorphins, we translated my experience through use of the body and video and created something together through a simple shared story.
