Teatro Jornalero Sin Fronteras

About Teatro Jornalero Sin Fronteras

Since the fall of 2008, Cornerstone Theater Company and the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) have formed a groundbreaking partnership in the creation of Teatro Jornalero Sin Fronteras, a traveling theater troupe made up entirely of day laborers in Los Angeles. Teatro Jornalero Sin Fronteras features 12 to 15 day laborers who meet at Cornerstone to rehearse original short plays meant to educate and spotlight the struggles of living and working as a day laborer without documentation in L.A. Since November of 2008, the troupe has performed over 40 times at job centers and work sites all over greater Los Angeles, for more than 3,000 fellow day laborers. After a successful partnership with NDLON in 2007 for Cornerstone\’s production of Los Illegals, written by Artistic Director Michael John Garcés in collaboration with day laborers and domestic workers in Los Angeles, the two organizations decided to continue their partnership through the creation of a theater troupe, with a goal of improving the lives of day laborers everywhere by creating plays by, with and for the day laborer community. The troupe is meant to give voice to the stories and concerns of the day laborer community, as well as educating them on their rights, promoting their artistic abilities, fostering a sense of community and bringing joy.
