About Serious Play! Theater Ensemble

Serious Play trains diverse youth in the process, discipline, and art of theatre. Using experimental and traditional theatre techniques, the program challenges and supports young people as they explore their individual history, creativity, and voice in the context of an ensemble, creating and staging powerful drama with strong contemporary messages. Young actors bring quick-fire imaginations and a sense of wildness to artistic work. The self-discipline of avant-garde techniques pioneered by Tadashi Suzuki and Anne Bogart provide clear forms through which to channel this marvelous, rich emotional life. We hope to help revitalize American theatre by reclaiming it as a unique art form with much more power than television. If we begin with young actors who invite their peers as audience to share their contemporary and insightful work, we begin to educate future generations to the power and intimacy of the live moment.
