Progress Theatre

About Progress Theatre

Founded in 2001, Progress Theatre [PT] is an international touring ensemble of multi-disciplined performers committed to using art to encourage social consciousness, cross-community dialogue and cultural awareness. We create new theatre works that blend African American cultural legacy and performance traditions (spirituals, blues, storytelling) with contempory aesthetics (spoken word, movement, R&B/Hip-Hop). We have a growing repertoire of 4 original musical theatre works that engage topics from African American culture to Muslim American identity, from HIV/AIDS to race and gender relations, from academia and politics to pop-culture. Our work aims to explore the concerns & insights of today's generation, with the intention of being active participants in efforts towards peace, freedom, understanding and progress.

PT also sponsors two outreach programs to engage the communites where we tour and to inspire dialogue beyond the stage: "Generation Progress", our youth arts program (with chapters Atlanta & Baltimore) that teaches theatre as tool to inspire young people to contribute to the progress of their communities; and, "The Open Stage," a multi-genre version of an open mic that features community-based artists in the cities we tour. By engaging various communities onstage and off, PT strives to change the make-up of average theatergoers, encouraging audiences diverse in race, age, gender and spiritual background.
